After reading Ernesto Cardenal's collection of transcripts from Christian Base Communities in THE GOSPEL IN SOLENTINAME, I realized how relevant the Gospel stories could be --and in what dramatic ways. This song was written when refugees were pouring in to the United States from Latin American dictatorships. It is to be fervently hoped that someday soon it will become an historical relic only and not a vivid account of the lives of millions of our fellow human beings alive today.
